The First Tattoo Museum in The World

Maybe you don't know much about the first tattoo museum where we can find the old tattoo supply. But you may be familiar with Yoshihito Nakano, known as Horiyoshi III. As a traditional Japanese Irezumi tattoo ambassador, in the early 1980s, he conducted extensive cultural and artistic exchanges with the West, demonstrating his outstanding technique and artistic accomplishments, and was widely acclaimed. In the traditional Japanese irezumi, his technique reached an amazing level. He is also the owner of the world's first tattoo museum.

The Tattoo Museum in Yokohama was established in September 1999, and Mayumi Nakano (Horiyoshi III’s wife) runs it. All the works on display are from his personal collections, including 12 pieces of tattoos, which donated by volunteers. They are traditional Japanese tattoo equipment in the past several centuries, and many of them are original works done by famous tattoo artists from all over the world. Such as Ed Hardy, Leu family, Mick Tattoo, Luke Atkinson, Hanky Panky, Lal Hardy, George Bone and so on.

His private collections are filled with information about culture, customs, history and current skin art around the world. There are hundreds of exhibits in the museum, and the museum is currently published on overseas travel guides.

You can see some rare clothes and decorations, tebories, color powders, handkerchiefs and real cockroaches from Polynesia, as well as some original books and paintings from the Edo period. These are Yoshihito Nakano’s collections, witnessing the early tattoos played an important role in Japanese culture.

The museum also sells a lot of great things and works of art from the masters.

Although this small museum is not easy to find, it is worth a visit because of its authenticity and interesting items on display; here you can see the development and history of tattoo culture. I have been to many mainstream museums with white walls and strict rules, but it is very different. If you are interested in tattoo culture and happen to be in the Yokohama area, you should challenge it,  because it has a lot of historical information about Japanese tattoo scenes.
